Model cars have been a popular hobby since the 1900’s. Miniature models of automobiles and more specifically, cars, first appeared in the early decades of the 1900s. This was followed by tin and pressed steel model cars, trucks, and military vehicles in the 1940s.

Post World War II, it was very common for model cars to be manufacture in zinc alloy, and this became very popular in Europe in particular. America introduced a new range of die-cast metal models, and although these were of high quality they were often simple and lacking key details.

Moving forwards into the 1950’s, tin and pressed steel models entered the Japanese model making industry, but then swiftly moved to the popular die-cast models in the 1970’s, which are still the most popular material for model manufacturing. 

Today, China and other countries of Southeast Asia are the main producers of model cars. Manufacturing methods are also much more sophisticated and detail is key, with even the smallest of  features illustrated on the models.
