The Corgi models brand was established in 1933 by the Mettoy Company of Northampton. Named after the small breed of Welsh dog, the Corgi name was chosen by its founders due to strong association with the Royal family, and also to reflect the brand’s main manufacturing point in Swansea.
It wasn’t until 1956 that the Corgi brand name hit the UK with the launch of the first collection of bright and colourful model cars. Names linked with nostalgia including the Ford Consul, Morris Cowley, Riley Pathfinder, Vauxhall Velox, Rover 90 and Hillman Husky were among the first to be produced in this range, which is still widely sort after to collectors to this day.
From then on, Corgi models continued to release the die-cast car models to a worldwide audience, with a keen focus on intrinsic detail and quality. Always keen to set the brand apart from the rest, Corgi was known for manufacturing die-cast models with a difference. Corgi models had windows, and later, the brand developed Glidamatic spring suspension, opening bonnets and boots and diamond jewelled headlights in the tiny cars.
Some of the best known and most popular Corgi models released were those models of cars featured in film and TV, such as the Batmobile, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 – which remains the largest selling toy car ever produced. The brand then went on to produce models of trains, planes, trucks, and steam engines.
